PCA-Affiliated Adoption Agency Discriminates Against Papists

It probably comes as no surprise that Bethany Christian Services doesn't allow gays to adopt, but who knew Catholics wouldn't qualify?

The Jackson, Mississippi franchise of the Christian adoption agency, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America, categorically denies adoption to Catholic couples, "because their religion conflicts with the agency's 'Statement of Faith.'"

Evidently no one is certain which part of the Statement of Faith is contradicted by Catholic teaching. I read it a couple of times myself, and I'll be darned if there's anything overtly Protestant in there. It's basically a beefed-up version of the Apostle's Creed.

But I guess this shouldn't surprise us, coming from a denomination who disregarded an (inadequate) overture to re-evaluate the derogatory term "papist" in it's Confession, based on a technicality.

(By the way, how is there no constitutional process or procedure for amending the WCF, when in 1973 the denomination tossed out at least one article and reworded another one?)

I want to dream of a world in which ecumenism represents brotherhood between all the worlds' religions--but it seems a long way off when Christians won't even acknowledge other Christians.

According to the AP article, the BCS office in Jackson is a PCA project. Each PCA chapter has a different affiliations.

People at Covenant work with Bethany, though I don't think any of them read this or any other blog.

I'm glad I've lived in the South, but I was also glad to leave. Illiteracy, poverty, overt racial tensions, redneck pride, and sweltering humidity just don't do anything for me. Nor does residual anti-Catholic paranoia. We've got enough of that as it is.
